In short: Henry VI ascended the throne as an infant, becoming the only English monarch crowned King of France. Yet, his adult reign was defined by mental collapse, the total loss of French territories, and the brutal Wars of the Roses. Was he a victim of his own fragility or political circumstance?

Born in 1421, Henry VI became king at just eight months old. His early years were marked by the pinnacle of English power in France, but his personal rule, beginning in 1437, saw a rapid decline. Shy and averse to violence, Henry struggled to manage the factional infighting among his nobility. His marriage to Margaret of Anjou in 1445 was intended to secure peace, but the secret cession of the province of Maine and the loss of Normandy fueled widespread domestic unrest.

By 1453, England had lost almost all its continental holdings, leaving only Calais. That same year, Henry suffered a severe mental breakdown, rendering him unresponsive for over a year. This incapacity created a power vacuum, triggering the Wars of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York. While Henry was briefly restored to the throne in 1470 by the Earl of Warwick, his authority was nominal. His son, Edward of Westminster, was killed at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, effectively ending the Lancastrian line.

Henry died in the Tower of London in May 1471, shortly after Edward IV reclaimed the throne. While official accounts cited melancholia, many contemporaries suspected he was murdered on the orders of the new king to prevent him from becoming a rallying point for future rebellions. Despite his political failures, Henry left a lasting legacy through his patronage of education, including the founding of Eton College and King's College, Cambridge.
