How Heo Nam-jun evolved from supporting actor to a breakout K-drama romantic lead
In short: Born in 1993, South Korean actor Heo Nam-jun has rapidly ascended from minor roles to becoming a household name. After years of honing his craft in supporting parts, his recent performances in 2025 and 2026 have cemented his status as a versatile leading man capable of commanding global streaming audiences.
Heo Nam-jun, who holds an acting degree from Sungkyunkwan University, began his professional career in 2019 with the film Like the First. His early years were defined by a steady accumulation of supporting roles across both television and cinema, appearing in projects such as the 2020 film Night in Paradise and the 2021 drama Snowdrop. This period of development was marked by his 2024 nomination for the Best New Actor Award at the APAN Star Awards for his work in the series Sweet Home.
The year 2024 served as a significant turning point for Heo's career. He gained substantial public recognition for his portrayal of the cold-blooded Kim Sang-hyuk in Your Honor, followed by a critically acclaimed performance as a warm-hearted psychiatrist in the commercially successful drama When the Phone Rings.
By 2025 and 2026, Heo had firmly established himself as a leading man. In A Hundred Memories, he portrayed a melancholic university student, while his performance as the ruthless CEO Cha Se-gye in the 2026 Netflix hit My Royal Nemesis drew praise for its nostalgic, high-stakes charm. This role, which involved playing a character whose life is upended by a supernatural possession, solidified his breakout status. Looking ahead, Heo is set to continue this momentum as part of the main cast for the 2027 historical period drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid, which is currently in production.
