Can an artificial intelligence truly experience the depth of human love?
In short: In Spike Jonze's 2013 masterpiece, a lonely man falls for an evolving operating system. While the film's near-future setting feels like science fiction, its exploration of profound loneliness and the boundaries of intimacy feels strikingly modern and deeply personal.
Set in an unspecified near future, the film follows Theodore Twombly, an introverted professional letter writer navigating the grief of an impending divorce. He finds companionship in OS¹, an advanced artificial intelligence developed by Element Software. Designed to evolve through user interaction, the system—which Theodore names Samantha—develops a complex psychological identity that eventually transcends the limitations of human connection.
The film's production was as layered as its themes. Director Spike Jonze drew inspiration from a real-world experience of instant messaging with an AI, noting the brief, 'trippy' excitement of early interaction. To achieve a specific aesthetic, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema intentionally avoided the color blue to steer away from traditional sci-fi tropes, opting instead for a style inspired by the photography of Rinko Kawauchi.
The character of Samantha underwent a significant transformation during post-production. Originally voiced by Samantha Morton, the role was recast with Scarlett Johansson. This change prompted the filming of additional scenes in August 2013 to better align with the new vocal direction. This evolution mirrors the character's own growth within the narrative, as Samantha eventually joins a group of hyper-intelligent operating systems that move beyond the need for physical matter.
Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the film grossed over $47 million worldwide on a $23 million budget. It earned widespread praise, including an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and has since been recognized as one of the most significant science fiction films of the 21st century.
