In short: In a feat of digital infrastructure, Azerbaijan's primary gateway achieved a global first by migrating its entire operational framework to the cloud. This transition places it at the forefront of aviation technology, moving beyond mere physical architecture into an era of intelligent, interconnected building management.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport serves as the busiest hub in Azerbaijan and one of the most active in post-Soviet countries. While its history dates back to 1933—beginning with a flight to Moscow over the Caucasus Mountains—its modern identity was forged through rapid expansion. The airport transitioned from 'Bina International' to its current name by presidential decree in March 2004, honoring former Soviet party boss and Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev.

The facility is defined by two distinct terminals with contrasting origins. Terminal 2, designed by architect Viktor Denisov, was awarded first prize in a competition in 1981 and implemented in 1989 to handle domestic and short-range flights. In contrast, the newer Terminal 1 opened in April 2014. Designed by the Arup Group with a tricorn shape and semi-transparent roof, it features an interior of oak-veneer 'cocoons' designed by the Turkish company AUTOBAN.

Technological sophistication is central to its recent accolades. Beyond becoming the first airport globally to fully utilize cloud technologies in October 2023, Terminal 1 incorporates a Building Management System (BMS) that automates essential operations like lighting and ventilation. It also utilizes L-3 equipment for baggage inspection, which produces layered images of an object's internal structure. These advancements have helped the airport secure multiple Skytrax awards, including 'Best Regional Airport in Central Asia and the CIS' as recently as March 2023.

Logistically, the airport manages a complex network of two near-parallel runways and serves as a hub for national carriers like Azerbaijan Airlines. It is connected to Baku via Aeroexpress buses launched in 2015 and a 24-hour BakuBus H1 line. While the city's metro system is expanding toward 2040, a direct metro link to the airport remains outside current development plans.
