From a rural village to a global hub: the transformation of Moscow Domodedovo Airport
In short: Once a small settlement with 16th-century roots, Moscow Domodedovo Airport evolved into a massive international transit center. Today, it operates under a unique architectural concept that keeps all passengers under one roof, while navigating a complex history of privatization, nationalization, and significant infrastructure expansion to serve millions of travelers annually.
The site of Domodedovo Airport was originally home to the village of Elgazino, first mentioned in the 16th century. By the 1950s, just before the village was demolished to make way for the airport, it housed approximately 200 residents. The area's transition into a modern aviation hub accelerated in the 1990s when it was privatized under the East Line company. This era saw the airport gain international status in 1992, eventually attracting major global carriers like British Airways and Lufthansa by 2009.
A defining feature of the airport is its 'under one roof' architectural strategy, designed to maximize transfer efficiency. This concept was significantly bolstered by the construction of Terminal 2, a project that faced delays but reached completion in 2020. This expansion added 235,000 square metres of space, effectively doubling the total terminal area to nearly 500,000 square metres. The facility now includes advanced amenities, such as a specialized medical clinic and a hotel located directly within the terminal, the first of its kind in Russia.
The airport's ownership structure has seen dramatic shifts. In 2025, the Russian government nationalized the facility following a court ruling regarding the residency status of its owners, Dmitry Kamenshchik and Valery Kogan. By January 2026, after an initial failed auction, the government sold the airport to Perspektiva, an entity linked to the rival Sheremetyevo International Airport, for 66.1 billion rubles. Despite these administrative changes, the airport remains a critical piece of infrastructure, serving as Russia's first facility capable of handling simultaneous parallel runway operations and large-capacity aircraft like the Airbus A380.
