In short: From its 1995 debut in Mumbai to becoming the 10th largest bank in the world, HDFC Bank’s ascent is a masterclass in scale. But behind the massive market capitalization lies a complex story of historic mergers, aggressive digital shifts, and significant regulatory scrutiny.

Incorporated in August 1994, HDFC Bank began operations in January 1995 under the leadership of its first managing director, Aditya Puri. Originally a subsidiary of HDFC Ltd, the bank benefited from the liberalization of India's banking industry. A defining moment arrived on July 1, 2023, when the bank completed its merger with its parent company, HDFC Ltd. This massive transaction, described as India's largest-ever merger and acquisition deal, transformed the institution into the second-largest bank in India by assets, trailing only the State Bank of India.

The bank's scale is immense: by 2026, its distribution network included 9,694 branches and over 20,000 ATMs across 4,175 cities and villages. Its customer base, reaching 120 million people, is larger than the entire population of Germany. As of 2025, HDFC achieved a position as the 10th largest bank globally by market capitalization, with a valuation reaching $137.15 billion by April 2026.

However, this rapid growth has been accompanied by significant turbulence. The bank has faced various regulatory penalties from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), including a ₹10 crore fine in 2021 for auto loan compliance failures. More recently, the bank has dealt with allegations of misselling high-risk AT1 bonds in Dubai and Bahrain, leading to the resignation of chairman Atanu Chakraborty in March 2026. Simultaneously, the bank is navigating a massive technological pivot, training over 50,000 employees in GenAI to automate operations and evolve alongside a digital-first landscape.
