How a Grammy-winning metal outfit from Oakland redefined the sound of heavy music
In short: Formed in 1998 by Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, High on Fire has spent over two decades evolving through lineup shifts and sonic experimentation. From their raw beginnings to their 2019 Grammy win, the band remains a consistent force in heavy metal, balancing aggressive tradition with a relentless drive for innovation.
High on Fire emerged in 1998 in Oakland, California, founded by Matt Pike following his tenure with the band Sleep. The group initially formed as a four-piece, featuring Pike alongside drummer Des Kensel, guitarist Karl Larson, and bassist Ron. After early creative friction led to Kensel's departure, the band reformed with a tighter focus: Pike took over lead vocal duties, while original vocalist George Rice transitioned to bass. This core unit laid the foundation for their debut, The Art of Self Defense, released in 2000.
The band's trajectory is marked by significant production collaborations and critical acclaim. Their 2005 release, Blessed Black Wings, was produced by Steve Albini, while subsequent records like 2015's Luminiferous saw the band working with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. Critics have frequently noted the band's ability to maintain a consistent identity while incorporating subtle experimentation. This consistency culminated in a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the track Electric Messiah, cementing their status within the genre.
Stability has often been challenged by personnel changes. Longtime drummer and co-founder Des Kensel departed in 2019, eventually succeeded by Coady Willis in 2021. The band has navigated these transitions while maintaining a prolific output, releasing nine studio albums as of 2024. Despite health-related touring interruptions in 2012, the group has continued to headline major circuits and contribute to diverse projects, including the soundtrack for the 2010 remake of Splatterhouse and a Motörhead tribute album in 2022.
