In short: When office worker Rei Ohashi died from overwork, she woke up inside her favorite otome game. But instead of pursuing the princes, she set her heart on the game's antagonist, Claire François. This subversion of romance tropes turned a niche web novel into a massive international success.

The series, written by Inori and illustrated by Hanagata, began its life on the Japanese self-publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Serialized between January 2018 and February 2021, the story follows Rae Taylor, a woman who uses her knowledge of the game 'Revolution' to prevent the villainess, Claire François, from meeting a tragic end during a revolution. The original work was first acquired by Ainaka Publishing under their GL Bunko imprint. This digital release occurred in February 2019.

The narrative's success is deeply tied to its focus on yuri—stories centered on female-female relationships. Inori, the author, noted that while she writes heterosexual stories, she felt they did not fit her natural style. She sought to move beyond subtle emotions to explore vivid, intense feelings, connecting the central romance to a much larger narrative arc. The author mentioned that Shinobu Saeki was a writer who had a significant influence on her. Inori also noted that her writing style naturally gravitates towards yuri themes.

The series' journey from digital web novel to global phenomenon was fueled by fan enthusiasm. While initial sales were modest, English and Korean fan translations helped build an international following. This momentum led to official North American licensing by Seven Seas Entertainment and a manga adaptation in Comic Yuri Hime, which began serialization in June 2020. The manga adaptation features artwork by Aonoshimo. This series has been appearing in Ichijinsha's magazine since mid-2020.

The franchise has since expanded into multiple iterations, including the 'Revolution' paperback editions and various spin-offs. This includes a retelling from Claire's perspective and a series focusing on the protagonists' daughters, Aleah and May, scheduled for release in early 2027. The spin-off series focuses on the lives of the protagonists' children. These new volumes are expected to arrive in January 2027.
