What happens when every ordinary human suddenly gains superpowers?
In short: In 1997, artist Alex Ross imagined a dystopian future where the line between hero and civilian vanished. This vision, known as Earth X, transformed the Marvel Universe into a world of mutated masses, cosmic conspiracies, and the heavy cost of evolution.
The concept for Earth X (designated Earth-9997) originated from a 199/97 article in Wizard magazine. Artist Alex Ross proposed a future where the Terrigen Mists, released by Black Bolt to protect the Inhumans, mutated the entire human population. This 'Plague X' turned ordinary people into superpowered beings, fundamentally altering the social fabric of Earth.
The resulting narrative, written by Jim Krueger and published by Marvel in 1999, explored the consequences of a world where heroism is no longer exceptional. The series features profound shifts in iconic characters: Thor has been transformed into a woman by Loki's trickery, Bruce Banner has been split into a child-like form and an ape-like Hulk, and T'Challa has mutated into a humanoid panther. Even the Watcher, Uatu, was left blinded and nihilistic after Black Bolt's actions.
At its core, the saga reveals a cosmic hierarchy. Loki discovers that the Celestials modified ancient humans to act as biological antibodies, protecting the 'embryos' of Celestials growing within planets. However, these beings are restrained by a psychological safeguard rooted in constructivist philosophy—their very identities as 'gods' or 'devils' prevent them from challenging their creators. The series concludes with massive shifts in the cosmic order, including Reed Richards ascending to become the new Eternity, and the destruction of the entity Death, which left the living unable to die.
The influence of Earth X extends beyond the page. Elements of its storyline have been adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the 2021 film Eternals and 2022's Moon Knight. Additionally, an Earth X version of Spider-Man appeared in the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
