From failed veterinary student to acclaimed actress: the career trajectory of Imogen Poots
In short: Imogen Poots initially planned to become a veterinary surgeon, but a fainting spell during work experience redirected her path toward the screen. Without formal acting training, she built a career through practical experience, evolving from a breakout horror role to starring in diverse international film and television productions.
Born in London in 1989, Poots grew up in Chiswick and attended private schools. Her early academic ambitions were firmly set on medicine until a visceral reaction to surgery during a placement forced her to reconsider her future. This pivot led her to improvisation workshops at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, marking the start of a career that would eventually see her deferring a spot at the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2008 to focus on acting.
Her professional breakthrough arrived at age 17 when she was cast in the 2007 horror film 28 Weeks Later. Rather than following a traditional drama school route, Poots refined her craft through a series of roles in independent and mainstream projects. Critics have noted her natural presence on camera, a quality that helped her transition seamlessly between genres, from the psychological intensity of The Father in 2020 to her 2023 portrayal of Rose Dugdale in Baltimore.
Beyond film, Poots has maintained a significant presence in theater and television. Her 2017 performance as Honey in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Harold Pinter Theatre earned her a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. More recently, she has taken on complex roles in series like Outer Range and films such as The Chronology of Water, which was released in 2025. Her work continues to span both sides of the Atlantic, as she currently splits her time between London and New York City.
