In short: Born in 1961 to a Dutch mother and English father, Saskia Reeves was an indifferent student who skipped classes and avoided homework. Seeking an escape from traditional university paths, she stumbled upon drama school as a way to buy time. That choice launched a prolific career spanning decades of British television.

Reeves grew up in London, raised in Twickenham and Paddington. Despite having a father who worked as an actor, writer, and singer, her parents did not push her toward the arts. As a teenager, she and her sister participated in weekend acting workshops primarily for amusement. When her secondary school performance faltered and she opted out of her A-level exams, she needed a new direction. Discovering that drama schools did not require those specific qualifications, she enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, viewing it as a three-year window to decide on her future.

Her professional journey began with modest roles, including puppet shows and satirical revues at the Covent Garden Community Theatre. After spending eighteen months working as a waitress, she secured a position at a theatre in Wales, which eventually convinced her that acting could be a sustainable livelihood. Her stage career grew to include prestigious collaborations with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, and the international company Cheek by Jowl. In 2008, she took a lead role in a revival of Athol Fugard's Hello and Goodbye at London's Trafalgar Studios.

Reeves transitioned into a versatile screen presence, with early film credits like the 1991 drama Close My Eyes and the 1995 road movie Butterfly Kiss. Her television career gained significant momentum in 1997 with the BBC One miniseries Plotlands. Over the following decades, she became a fixture in British television, appearing in projects ranging from the 2010 dramatization Canoe Man to the first season of Luther. Currently, she is recognized for her role in the Apple TV series Slow Horses, where she performs alongside Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, continuing a career that began as a way to avoid traditional academic pressure.
