Six cosmic artifacts that embody the fundamental pillars of existence
In short: In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Infinity Stones are more than just powerful relics. Born from the remnants of six singularities that predated the Big Bang, these artifacts allow their wielders to manipulate the very fabric of reality, time, and space, carrying enough power to reshape the entire cosmos.
According to lore established in the MCU, these stones were compressed by cosmic entities after the universe began. Each stone governs a specific aspect of existence: Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time, and Soul. While most are solid gems, the Reality Stone appeared in a liquid-like state known as the Aether, and the Space Stone was famously housed within the Tesseract.
The stones' history is deeply intertwined with Earth's timeline. The Tesseract was hidden in the Norwegian village of Tønsberg by Odin before being stolen by Johann Schmidt in 1942 to power Hydra's weapons. In 1989, experiments with the stone's energy granted Carol Danvers superhuman abilities. Later, in 2012, the stone's power was used by Loki to open a wormhole over New York City.
The scale of their power is immense and often dangerous to mortals. The Power Stone can destroy entire civilizations with a single blast, yet its energy is often too intense for most beings to touch without being destroyed. The Soul Stone is perhaps the most enigmatic, capable of controlling life and death and containing a pocket dimension known as the Soul World. This necessitates extreme sacrifices, such as the one Thanos forced upon Gamora on the planet Vormir to claim it.
While the stones were central to the events of 2018's Infinity War, their influence extends across the Multiverse. They appear in various timelines and alternate universes, including the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) and the television series Loki (2021).
