How a 1953 intelligence operation transformed a close ally into a bitter adversary
In short: For decades, the United States and Iran were strategic partners. Yet, a single CIA-backed coup changed the trajectory of the Middle East forever. From the era of the Shah to the 1979 Revolution and recent escalations, the history of this relationship is a volatile cycle of intervention, hostage crises, and profound distrust.
The foundation of modern hostility traces back to August 1953. Fearing that Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh’s plan to nationalize oil production would push the nation toward the Soviet Union, the CIA and British intelligence orchestrated a coup. This operation overthrew the democratically elected Mosaddeq and restored Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi to power. While the Shah modernized Iran through his 'White Revolution' and maintained close ties with Washington—even receiving nuclear technology via the 1957 'Atoms for Peace' program—his autocratic rule fueled deep domestic resentment.
The relationship reached a breaking point during the 1979 Revolution. Led by the exiled cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the movement toppled the Shah, who fled the country in January 1979. The subsequent takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran by Iranian students in November 1979 began the 444-day hostage crisis, during which 52 Americans were held captive. This era cemented the U.S. as the 'Great Satan' in the eyes of the new Islamic Republic, a sentiment Khomeini used to mobilize his followers.
The ensuing decades were marked by direct conflict and clandestine maneuvers. The 1980s saw the Iran-Iraq War, where the U.S. supported Iraq, and the Iran-Contra Affair, a scandal involving the secret sale of arms to Iran to fund rebels in Nicaragua. More recently, the relationship has swung between the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) and renewed sanctions. The volatility escalated sharply in 2026, following U.S. and Israeli attacks that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, leading to a brief, mediated ceasefire in June 2026.
