How a $400 million acquisition ended a high-stakes arena war
In short: For years, the Los Angeles Clippers were tenants in their own city, forced to scrub away Lakers' glory before every game. Now, they have a permanent home in Inglewood—but the path to this 'basketball palazzo' was paved with lawsuits, corporate espionage, and a massive all-cash takeover.
The construction of the Intuit Dome was far from a straightforward development. For decades, the Clippers lacked true ownership of their venues, moving from Buffalo to San Diego and eventually to a shared arrangement at Crypto.com Arena. In that shared space, the team faced a nightly 'neutralization' ritual, where Lakers banners and sponsorships had to be covered and restored within a narrow three-<0xC2>-to-four-hour window between events.
The push for a dedicated Inglewood arena sparked intense litigation. The Madison Square Garden Company, owners of the nearby Kia Forum, allegedly used legal battles to protect their business interests. This included funding groups like Inglewood Residents Against Takings and Evictions to oppose the project. Tensions peaked when leaked communications suggested attempts to lure the Lakers to the Forum to block the Clippers' progress.
The deadlock only broke in March 2020, when Clippers owner Steve Ballmer pivoted from litigation to acquisition. He purchased the Forum from MSG in a $400 million cash transaction, effectively removing the final major obstacle to construction. This move cleared the way for the groundbreaking on September 17, 2021, and the eventual opening of the Intuit Dome on August 15, 2024.
Today, the 18,000-seat arena stands as the newest venue in the NBA. Beyond basketball, it serves as a cultural hub, hosting everything from Bruno Mars concerts and WWE Raw on Netflix to the 2028 Summer Olympics. The facility is designed with fan experience in mind, featuring 'The Wall'—a massive, suite-free section for die-hard supporters—and a 4K halo board that spans over 38,000 square feet.
