The Indiana University of Pennsylvania football program has roots in the dawn of professionalism
In short: Long before becoming a Division II powerhouse, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania football team was testing its mettle against the very first professional squads. From early struggles against the Latrobe Athletic Association to the modern era of NFL success, the Crimson Hawks have a history defined by resilience and evolution.
The football program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, known as the Crimson Hawks, traces its origins to at least 1890, when the Indiana Normal School played the Greensburg Athletic Association. In those formative years, the school faced a variety of opponents, including club teams and established universities. Notably, the Normal School played the Latrobe Athletic Association—the first professional football team—six times between 1895 and 1903, managing one scoreless tie while being outscored 201–0 in the remaining matches. The program's early history is also linked to John Brallier, who attended the school in 1893 at age 17 and later became the first professional football player.
The modern era of the program began to take shape under George Miller, whose tenure started in 1927 and lasted 20 seasons. Miller's teams were twice recognized as the best among Pennsylvania state normal schools, in 1934 and 1940. Following the formation of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in 1951, the program saw significant growth under coaches like Chuck Klausing and Frank Cignetti. Cignetti, who coached from 1986 to 2005, transformed the team into a consistent contender, securing ten Lambert Cups as the top Division II team in the east and making two appearances in the NCAA Division II Championship game.
The program has continued to produce talent for the professional ranks, with seven players selected in the NFL draft through 2010, including Dave Smith and Jim Haslett. More recently, players like Dondrea Tillman have made an impact, with Tillman recording two sacks in his 2024 NFL debut. Today, the Crimson Hawks compete at George P. Miller Stadium, maintaining a legacy that spans over a century of collegiate competition and a deep connection to the development of the sport in Pennsylvania.
