The football innovation hidden within a forgotten college program
In short: Long before the modern era of high-tech playbooks, a coach at Buchtel College helped invent a fundamental element of the game. While the Akron Zips have navigated decades of coaching changes and divisional shifts, their legacy holds a permanent mark on the mechanics of every snap taken today.
The roots of the Akron Zips football program trace back to 1891, when the team competed as Buchtel College. While the program's early years were marked by instability—including nine different coaches in just 22 years—it also hosted one of the sport's most significant pioneers. In 1893, the college hired John Heisman, who led the team to an undefeated season in a single-game campaign. Beyond his coaching success, Heisman is credited with helping to invent the snap, a fundamental mechanic still central to modern football.
The program's identity has evolved alongside the city of Akron. In 1926, the teams were known as the 'Zippers,' a nod to the rubber boots manufactured by the local B.F. Goodrich Company. The name was eventually shortened to 'Zips' in 1950. The program has also navigated a complex series of institutional transitions, moving from Small College status to Division II in 1973, and eventually becoming a Division I-AA program in 1980. Notably, Akron was the first program to successfully transition from Division I-AA to Division I-A (now FBS) in 1987.
Despite periods of significant struggle, including a three-year hiatus from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II, the Zips have experienced historic peaks. In 2005, under head coach J.D. Brookhart, the team secured its first Mid-American Conference championship with a 31–30 victory in the title game. While the program has faced difficult stretches, such as a 2–22 record under Rob Ianello, its history is a testament to the enduring, evolving nature of collegiate competition.
