A record-breaking leap for Indiana University football
In short: The 2026 Indiana Hoosiers season marked a historic milestone for the program's professional pipeline. From setting all-time records at the NFL Draft Combine to hosting high-profile pro days with national media coverage, the team demonstrated a significant shift in its ability to develop elite talent.
Under the leadership of third-year head coach Curt Cignetti, the 2026 Indiana Hoosiers competed as members of the Big Ten Conference. The program saw unprecedented visibility during this cycle, highlighted by a pro day hosted at John Mellencamp Pavilion on April 1, 2026. This event attracted representatives from every single NFL team—including Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak—and was broadcast live across major networks like ESPN and the NFL Network.
The program's success in talent identification reached new heights during the 2026 NFL Draft process. A total of nine Hoosiers were invited to the NFL Draft Combine, establishing a new program record. Among these standout athletes, D'Angelo Ponds made a notable impression by recording a 43.5-inch vertical jump; this performance ranked him second among all 2026 participants and fourth all-time for cornerbacks.
This momentum carried into the draft itself, where the program set another record by having eight players selected. While some players like punter Mitch McCarthy received training camp invitations from teams like the Patriots, others such as wide receiver Jonathan Brady and offensive lineman Kahlil Benson transitioned to undrafted free agent roles with the Raiders and Chiefs, respectively.
The season's preparation was underscored by significant public interest, evidenced by roughly 21,000 fans attending the spring game on April 23. This atmosphere of growth suggests a program successfully navigating the transition into a more prominent role within the Big Ten landscape.
