Born without powers, Izuku Midoriya became the world's most vital hero through sheer persistence.
In short: In a world where 80% of the population possesses superhuman Quirks, Izuku Midoriya was born entirely powerless. Yet, his relentless drive to save others earned him the legendary One For All ability. From a bullied outcast to a global icon, his journey redefines what it means to be a hero.
Izuku Midoriya, the protagonist of Kōhei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia, was originally conceived as a powerless salaryman named Jack Midoriya in a 2008 one-shot. In the final series, he is a Quirkless teenager who idolizes the world's top hero, All Might. After demonstrating immense courage by attempting to save a classmate from a villain, Izuku is chosen to inherit All Might's power, One For All. This unique ability stockpiles energy and embeds the Quirks of previous holders—including Gearshift, Fa Jin, Danger Sense, Blackwhip, Smokescreen, and Float—into the current user.
The character's development is marked by his transition from a defenseless boy to a strategic leader. His nickname, Deku, was originally a cruel jab from his childhood bully, Katsuki Bakugo, implying he was useless. However, his classmate Ochaco Uraraka helped him reclaim the name, associating it with the Japanese word dekiru, meaning 'you can do it.' This shift reflects his growth; he becomes an encouraging influence who helps peers like Shoto Todoroki and Fumikage Tokoyami overcome their own limitations through empathy and tactical insight.
Izuku's impact extends beyond the manga, appearing in numerous video games, movies, and crossover events, including collaborations with Fortnite and Overwatch 2. His popularity is consistent, often ranking near the top of global polls. Following a climactic battle against Tomura Shigaraki and All For One, Izuku loses his powers and retires from active hero work. Eight years later, he returns to the field using a high-tech suit funded by his former classmates and colleagues, proving that his heroism was never solely defined by his innate abilities.
