How J. Cole broke a 54-year-old Beatles record
In short: From local Fayetteville mixtapes to dominating the Billboard charts, J. Cole’s trajectory is remarkable. He has achieved feats once reserved for legends, including tying a record held by The Beatles for over half a century, proving his massive impact on the modern hip-hop landscape.
J. Cole’s ascent began in his teens, collaborating with the Fayetteville hip hop duo Bomm Sheltuh. His journey through the mixtape circuit—starting with The Come Up on May 4, 2007, followed by The Warm Up in 2009 and Friday Night Lights in 2010—eventually caught the attention of Jay-Z, leading to a contract with Roc Nation. His first single, "Lights Please", achieved his initial national chart success by reaching number nine on the Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. He also gained early recognition through a 2010 appearance on Miguel's single "All I Want Is You".
His studio albums have consistently delivered significant commercial success. His debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, released on September 27, 2011, sold 218,000 copies in its first week and reached number one on the US Billboard 200. Released on 9 December 2014, his third record, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, reached a landmark status as the inaugural rap project in 25 years to earn US platinum certification without featuring any guests. His debut album's lead single, "Work Out", reached number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, the singles "Can't Get Enough" and "Nobody's Perfect" reached numbers 52 and 61 on the same chart.
Cole's chart dominance reached a peak with his fifth album, KOD. He became the first musician to debut three new songs in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 simultaneously, with the tracks "ATM", "Kevin's Heart", and "KOD". This achievement matched The Beatles, who had possessed the record for 54 years for occupying six spots within the Hot 100's top 20. His album 4 Your Eyez Only reached number one on the Billboard 200 despite lacking singles at launch. Furthermore, the track "Deja Vu" eventually reached number seven on the Hot 100.
His vast collection of work includes seven studio albums, one live album, four compilations, four EPs, and four mixtapes. To date, he has released 76 singles, including 37 as a featured artist, alongside two promotional singles and 33 music videos. His fourth studio album, Born Sinner, saw the single "Power Trip" reach number 19 on the Hot 100. His 2014 Forest Hills Drive album also achieved platinum status in the US.
