The woman who claims to channel a 35,000-year-old warrior from a lost continent
In short: J. Z. Knight built an empire around Ramtha, a supposed Lemurian warrior she claims to channel. While thousands have flocked to her school in Washington, critics and scientists dismiss her teachings as pseudoscientific, citing a lack of evidence for her claims and accusing her of leading a dangerous cult.
J. Z. Knight, born Judith Darlene Hampton in 1946, rose to prominence in the 1980s as a celebrated channeler. She claims that in 1977, she was visited in her kitchen by Ramtha, a warrior from the legendary continent of Lemuria. According to Knight, Ramtha fought the Atlanteans over 35,000 years ago, leading an army of 2.5 million soldiers—a figure that contradicts scientific estimates of the global population at the time. Knight maintains that Ramtha eventually ascended into the air in a flash of light, promising to return to teach her the secrets of the universe.
The philosophy Knight propagates through Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, which she founded near Yelm, Washington, in 1987, blends New Age concepts with elements of quantum physics and Western occultism. Skeptics, including the late Carl Sagan and magician James Randi, have heavily criticized these teachings. Sagan famously noted that the simplest explanation is that Knight speaks for herself, offering only banal homilies rather than genuine insights from the Paleolithic era. Furthermore, the Southern Poverty Law Center has documented instances of Knight delivering racist, homophobic, and antisemitic rants while in her channeled persona.
Beyond the skepticism, Knight has faced numerous legal battles and accusations of cult-like behavior. Former students have alleged intimidation and mind control, and her former husband, Jeff Knight, claimed she advised him to delay HIV treatment based on Ramtha's supposed healing powers. Despite these controversies, Knight has successfully used the courts to protect her intellectual property, winning trademark cases that solidify her status as the sole authorized channeler of Ramtha. Today, she continues to lead her organization, maintaining a high-profile presence while remaining a polarizing figure in the landscape of modern American spirituality.
