In short: Born into the legacy of the legendary surgeon Harper Avery, Jackson Avery spent his career fighting to be seen as more than just a well-connected heir. From a surgical resident at Mercy West to a foundation leader in Boston, his journey is defined by a drive to prove his own worth.

Introduced in Season 6 of the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, Jackson Avery is portrayed by Jesse Williams. A surgical resident originally from Mercy West Medical Center, he joined the staff following a merger with Seattle Grace Hospital. Despite his family's immense prestige, Jackson sought to establish his own reputation rather than relying on his grandfather's fame. The character was created by producer Shonda Rhimes. He initially entered the series as a recurring cast member before being promoted to a series regular during the seventh season.

One of the nation's most celebrated surgeons, Harper Avery, was his grandfather and the namesake of the esteemed Harper Avery Award. While his grandfather once attempted to influence his career by suggesting a transfer to Massachusetts General Hospital, Jackson refused. This determination to succeed on his own merit saw him specialize in plastic surgery, eventually becoming the department chief. After working alongside Mark Sloan, he eventually rose to become the head of the plastic surgery department. His mother, Catherine, raised him alone following his father's departure.

Jackson's personal life was as complex as his professional ambitions. He and his wife, April Kepner, suffered the heartbreaking death of their son, Samuel, from osteogenesis imperfecta type II. After a period of estrangement and divorce, the two eventually reconciled while living in Boston. He later transitioned from hospital medicine to leading the Catherine Fox Foundation, offering unlimited resources to researchers like Meredith Grey to combat diseases such as Alzheimer's. His daughter, Harriet, was born during his marriage to April. This move to Boston allowed him to focus on his leadership role at the foundation.
