How a Florida city became the unlikely birthplace of the first Bitcoin transaction
In short: Jacksonville is known for its massive geographic footprint and military history, but it also holds a peculiar place in modern digital lore. In 2010, a local resident completed the first-ever retail purchase using cryptocurrency, trading 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas. Today, the city commemorates this milestone as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Jacksonville, the most populous city in Florida, occupies a unique position in American geography. Following a 1968 consolidation with Duval County, the city expanded to 900 square miles, making it the largest city by total area in the contiguous United States. Straddling the St. Johns River, the city has evolved from a colonial cattle crossing known as Cow Ford into a major military and logistics hub, hosting significant naval installations and the largest seaport in Florida by volume.
The city’s history is marked by dramatic cycles of destruction and reinvention. In 1901, the Great Fire of 1901 razed 146 city blocks in just eight hours, leaving 10,000 residents homeless. This disaster prompted a architectural transformation led by Henry John Klutho, who introduced Prairie School and Chicago School styles to the city. Later, in the 1960s, the city faced a crisis of governance and school accreditation, which catalyzed the 1968 consolidation movement. This reform, branded as the Bold New City of the South, unified municipal services to address urban sprawl and tax base erosion.
Beyond its infrastructure, Jacksonville has served as an unexpected cultural incubator. In the 1910s, it was the Winter Film Capital of the World, hosting over 30 silent film studios before Hollywood ascended. More recently, it became the site of a historic financial experiment. On May 22, 2010, local resident Laszlo Hanyecz facilitated the first retail cryptocurrency transaction by trading 10,000 bitcoins—worth about $40 at the time—for two pizzas. This event is now celebrated globally by crypto-enthusiasts as Bitcoin Pizza Day, cementing the city's status as an accidental pioneer in the digital economy.
