Jacob Wohl: How a Teenage Hedge Fund Founder Became a Professional Conspiracy Theorist
In short: Jacob Wohl rose from a teenage investment prodigy to a notorious figure in American political disinformation. Known for elaborate, failed plots to frame public figures and a massive, illegal robocall campaign, Wohl has navigated a career defined by fraud, fabricated intelligence agencies, and persistent legal battles across multiple states.
Born in 1997, Jacob Wohl began his career as a teenager, founding investment funds like NeX Capital Management. By 2017, the National Futures Association banned him for life, citing misleading investor presentations and the refusal to cooperate with investigations. His financial activities drew further scrutiny from the Arizona Corporation Commission, which charged him with 14 counts of securities fraud, and California authorities, who arrested him in 2019 for the unlawful sale of securities. Despite claims of managing millions, regulators found his actual client base and assets were significantly smaller than advertised.
Wohl later pivoted to political activism, frequently collaborating with lobbyist Jack Burkman. The pair became infamous for orchestrating disinformation campaigns, including fake intelligence agencies like Surefire Intelligence and staged events, such as a fabricated FBI raid on Burkman's home in 2020. They targeted high-profile figures, including Robert Mueller, Pete Buttigieg, and Anthony Fauci, with unfounded allegations. Their methods often involved hiring actors through Craigslist and using deceptive online personas to spread conspiracy theories, a practice that eventually led to bans from major social media platforms.
The duo's most significant legal downfall stemmed from an August 2020 robocall campaign that targeted non-white communities in battleground states with disinformation intended to suppress voting. This led to felony charges in Michigan and Ohio, as well as a landmark civil rights case in New York. By 2023, the Federal Communications Commission had imposed a fine exceeding $5 million. Despite these setbacks, Wohl continued to operate in lobbying circles, notably charging clients large sums for promised presidential pardons that never materialized, leading to further legal action and arbitration as of 2026.
