In short: Before entering the octagon, Jai Herbert spent 14 years working as a scaffolder. Balancing a full-time job with amateur fighting, he navigated the intense physical demands of the sport before finally signing with the UFC to compete at the highest level of mixed martial arts.

Born in Wolverhampton, England, on 13 May 1988, Herbert's journey to professional mixed martial arts was defined by long-term stability in another trade. During his amateur career, he competed at welterweight, choosing to avoid the physical strain of weight cutting at that level, and eventually amassed a record of 9–1. His early professional debut followed a successful amateur run. He notably participated in a kit launch for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Herbert's professional career began in 2015, marked by a series of knockout victories in promotions like BAMMA and Cage Warriors. His success in Cage Warriors included winning the vacant lightweight championship after defeating Jack Grant in 2019. He later successfully defended this title against Cain Carrizosa in October 2019 via a first-round knockout. His time with BAMMA was marked by both victories and a loss to Rhys McKee. He eventually left that promotion to join Cage Warriors.

In January 2020, Herbert transitioned to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His tenure in the lightweight division has seen a variety of outcomes, including a technical knockout victory over Khama Worthy in October 2021 and a majority draw against Ľudovít Klein in March 2023. His business interests are managed through JAI HERBERT MMA LTD, a private limited company incorporated in the UK on 2 March 2023. His UFC journey has included a victory against Kyle Nelson by decision. He also secured a first-round technical knockout against Mandel Nallo.
