In short: Before he was a top-ranked UFC lightweight, Jalin Turner had to overcome recurring injuries and a lack of equipment. Growing up in a rough San Bernardino neighborhood, he practiced shadow boxing and used his family's couch as a makeshift punching bag to prepare for his professional career.

Born on May 18, 1995, in San Bernardino, California, Turner's path to professional mixed martial arts was shaped by necessity. After suffering multiple injuries that prevented him from playing traditional sports like football or basketball in high school, he turned to MMA after watching bouts on television. Lacking the funds for professional training equipment as a teenager, he relied on running and improvised tools to build his skills before eventually joining Team Adrenaline.

Turner's rise through the ranks included an amateur record of 5–2 and a professional start in 2016. He competed in various organizations, including Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting, before entering the UFC. His technical proficiency is evident in his grappling; while he mentioned holding a purple belt in jiu-jitsu in 2018, a corporate sponsor reported him as a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in January 2022.

Known as "The Tarantula," Turner earned the nickname by collecting 200 tarantulas to overcome his childhood arachnophobia. His career has seen significant highs, including reaching a UFC lightweight ranking of #9 in January 2024. He has also been recognized for his striking and finishing ability, earning three Performance of the Night awards for his bouts against Brad Riddell, Bobby Green, and Kauê Fernandes. His resilience was on display during a brief apparent retirement in March 2025, followed by a return to the octagon in December 2025.
