The multi-hyphenate comedy powerhouse behind Stath Lets Flats
In short: Jamie Demetriou has mastered the art of the multi-character comedy. From his early days at the Edinburgh Fringe to winning a BAFTA trifecta, his work blends the awkward intimacy of mockumentaries with high-concept sketch comedy, capturing a specific brand of British humor that feels both surreal and deeply relatable.
Born in London to an English mother and a Greek-Cypriot father, Jamie Demetriou began his comedic journey at The Compton School and the Chickenshed Theatre. His early career was defined by critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival between 2009 and 2011, where his student revue show, Bristol Revunions, first garnered significant attention. By 2013, his one-man multi-character show, People Day, was already drawing high-level comparisons to Steve Coogan's iconic comedic style.
Demetriou's rise to prominence is marked by a prolific output of collaborative and solo projects. In 2015, he participated in the sketch show pilot People Time for BBC Three. While the pilot was not commissioned, it received glowing reviews from critics and comedians alike, eventually leading to the web series 2016: Year Friends. This series served as a stylistic bridge, drawing influence from British mockumentaries like The Office and the burgeoning reality TV genre.
His most significant commercial and critical success came with the Channel 4 sitcom Stath Lets Flats (2018–2021). Demetriou portrayed the lead and authored the work, securing three BAFTA Awards during 2020, which comprised Best Scripted Comedy, Male Performance in a Comedy Programme, and Best Writer: Comedy. His versatility continues to expand through roles in the American miniseries Four Weddings and a Funeral, a Netflix sketch series, and a consulting role for Saturday Night Live UK starting in 2026.
A recurring theme in Demetriou's career is collaboration, particularly with his sister, comedian and actress Natasia Demetriou. Together, they have appeared in various sketch pilots and comedy projects. His influence in the industry is further cemented by his role as a consultant for Saturday Night Live UK and his frequent appearances on major podcasts, showcasing a career built on a foundation of versatile character work and sharp, scripted comedy.
