From the E Street Band to Slipknot: the heavy metal legacy of Jay Weinberg
In short: Born into rock royalty, Jay Weinberg spent his youth substituting for his father, Max Weinberg, in Bruce Springsteen’s legendary E Street Band. Yet, the drummer’s career would eventually pivot from stadium anthems to the visceral, aggressive world of heavy metal and hardcore punk.
Jay Weinberg’s musical trajectory is defined by a remarkable duality. As the son of Max Weinberg, the long-standing drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Jay was thrust into the spotlight as a teenager. In 2009, during the Working on a Dream Tour, he stepped in to fill his father's seat while Max prepared for his role as bandleader for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. Springsteen’s manager, Jon Landau, even referred to the young drummer as a "secret weapon," and others, including guitarist Steve Van Zandt, suggested his talent was a genetic gift.
However, Weinberg’s musical identity was shaped as much by Ozzfest as by the E Street Band. A childhood exposure to heavy metal led him to a career spanning various intense genres. In 2014, he achieved a major milestone by replacing Joey Jordison in the iconic metal band Slipknot. His tenure with the group lasted nearly a decade, until a sudden "creative decision" led the band to part ways with him in November 2023, a move that left Weinberg feeling blindsided.
Between his high-profile stadium stints and Slipknot, Weinberg navigated the gritty landscapes of punk and hardcore. His resume includes roles in Madball, where a brief tenure ended in a dispute over band lifestyle, and Against Me!, a position he left via a sudden Twitter announcement in 2012. By 2024, his prolific movement continued as he joined Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies, proving a restless drive to remain at the forefront of the heavy music scene.
