How a childhood of hardship forged one of MMA's greatest coaching legends
In short: Javier Mendez, the founder of the American Kickboxing Academy, transformed from a world-class kickboxer into the architect behind some of the most dominant fighters in history. Driven by a difficult upbringing, he became the first coach to guide multiple two-division UFC champions, cementing his status as a titan of combat sports.
Born in Mexico in 1970 and raised in San Jose, California, Javier Mendez found early motivation in a turbulent home life. His father struggled with alcohol and gambling, often telling a young Mendez he would never succeed. This skepticism fueled a lifelong drive to prove his detractors wrong. By 1978, he began his martial arts journey in Tang Soo Do, eventually training under Scott Coker, who would later lead major organizations like Strikeforce and Bellator.
Mendez transitioned from a successful kickboxing career—where he secured two ISKA world titles—to coaching in the mid-1990s. His pivot to mixed martial arts began in 1996 when UFC fighter Brian Johnston asked for help improving his striking. This chance encounter launched Mendez into a new role as a full-time mentor. By 1997, he was already training Frank Shamrock, who became the inaugural UFC Light Heavyweight Champion under his guidance. This early success established the American Kickboxing Academy as a premier destination for elite talent.
His coaching legacy is defined by an unprecedented ability to manage multiple champions simultaneously. In 2015, he achieved the rare feat of holding three concurrent UFC champions: Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier, and Luke Rockhold. He remains the only coach to have guided multiple two-division UFC titleholders, including Cormier and Islam Makhachev. His influence extends beyond the UFC, as seen in his 2022 recognition as Coach of the Year alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov and his work with Bellator champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Mendez’s career reflects a shift from individual competitive glory to the cultivation of a championship culture that continues to shape the sport today.
