In short: Formed in 1995, the American nu metal band Snot achieved a cult following before the sudden death of their founding vocalist, Lynn Strait, in 1998. Despite disbanding immediately after his loss, the group has experienced multiple, complex reunions over the decades, navigating shifting lineups and a legacy built on tribute.

Snot emerged from Santa Barbara, California, founded by vocalist Lynn Strait and lead guitarist Mikey Doling. After gaining traction in Los Angeles, they signed with Geffen Records and released their debut studio album, Get Some, on May 13, 1997. The band quickly became known for their high-energy performances, including a notable appearance on the 1998 Ozzfest tour. However, their momentum was abruptly halted on December 11, 1998, when a truck collision killed Strait and his dog, Dobbs. Following the tragedy, Doling declared the band could not continue without their original frontman.

The band's second act began with the 2000 release of Strait Up, a tribute album featuring guest vocalists from prominent bands like Korn, Slipknot, and System of a Down. While often associated with the band's unfinished sophomore material, Doling later clarified in 2021 that he wrote entirely new music for the project to suit the styles of the guest singers. The album reached number 56 on the Billboard 200. Since then, the band has undergone several cycles of reunion and hiatus, including the formation of the short-lived project Tons in 2009 and various lineup changes involving members like Sonny Mayo, Tommy Vext, and current vocalist Andy Knapp.

Today, Snot remains a fluid entity, characterized by its rotating cast of musicians and persistent attempts to record new material. As of May 2026, the group has completed eight songs for an upcoming album under producer Chris Collier. Despite the frequent departures and replacements—including touring substitutes for guitar and drums—the band continues to navigate the legacy of their brief, influential start, balancing their history with the ongoing creative efforts of the remaining original members.
