In short: Before he was a celebrated showrunner, Jed Mercurio was a trained doctor and a Royal Air Force officer. His transition from medicine to the screen began with a medical drama so realistic it topped polls among healthcare professionals, launching a career defined by high-stakes tension and massive viewership.

Born in 1966 to Italian immigrant parents, Mercurio’s path to television was unconventional. Following his medical studies at the University of Birmingham, he underwent flight training via the University Air Squadron before becoming a pilot officer within the Royal Air Force Medical Branch. Though he was promoted to flying officer in June 1991, he resigned his commission in February 1992. He was originally born in Lancashire and raised in Staffordshire. His father worked as a coal miner.

His writing career began through a serendipitous advertisement in the British Medical Journal. He wrote the BBC medical series Cardiac Arrest using the name John MacUre, notwithstanding his minimal previous experience in writing. The series, which aired from 1994 to 1996, was noted for its realistic depiction of hospital life and was twice nominated for Best Original Drama by the Writers' Guild of Great Britain. He later retired from the medical profession to focus entirely on his writing.

Mercurio has since become a powerhouse of British drama, moving from medical settings to police and political thrillers. His series Bodies (2004–06) was recognized by The Guardian as one of the greatest TV dramas of all time. His massive success continued with Line of Duty, which premiered on BBC2 on 26 June 2012 to 4.1 million viewers, and the BBC One hit Bodyguard, which began broadcasting on 26 August 2018. He also created the comedy series The Grimleys. His science fiction work included Invasion: Earth.

Mercurio became a Fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2017 and earned an OBE during the 2021 New Year Honours for his work in television drama. He also maintains a first-look deal with 20th Television.
