In short: Joseph Trevor Wicks transformed from a teaching assistant into a digital fitness powerhouse. By leveraging short, high-intensity workout videos and nutrition advice, he built a massive online following. His influence spans best-selling cookbooks, record-breaking livestreams, and charitable initiatives, though his public commentary has occasionally sparked significant industry controversy.

Born in 1985 in Epsom, Surrey, Wicks grew up on a council estate in Ewell. After completing a sports science degree at St Mary's University, he briefly worked as a teaching assistant before transitioning to a five-year career as a personal trainer. His breakthrough began in 2014 when he started sharing fitness and nutrition content on Instagram and YouTube. His brand, The Body Coach, quickly gained traction, eventually amassing millions of followers across social platforms.

Wicks achieved mainstream success with his 2015 cookbook, Lean in 15: 15-minute meals, which sold over 900,000 copies. His influence peaked during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic when he launched PE with Joe on YouTube. The initiative, designed to keep children active, earned him a Guinness World Record for the most viewers for a fitness workout livestream, with over 950,000 concurrent viewers on 24 March 2020. For his contributions during this period, he was awarded an MBE in the 2020 Birthday Honours.

Despite his popularity, Wicks has faced criticism for his public statements. In 2024, he drew backlash for suggesting that ADHD is caused by diet. Additionally, his 2025 documentary, Joe Wicks: Licensed to Kill, where he created a protein bar from ingredients he labeled as dangerous, was criticized by UK food and wellbeing sectors as fear-mongering. Beyond his media career, Wicks is involved in philanthropy, notably raising over £2 million for Children in Need through a 24-hour workout challenge and serving as a patron for The Amber Foundation, a youth homelessness charity.
