How a childhood obsession with a television banjo player birthed a metal guitar icon
In short: John William Lowery, known globally as John 5, transformed from a Michigan kid inspired by televised country music into a premier guitarist for Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and Mötley Crüe. His career is a study in relentless technical precision, navigating the volatile politics of industrial metal and high-stakes arena rock.
Born in 1970, Lowery’s trajectory began after he witnessed a young Jimmy Henley perform on the television program Hee Haw. This early fascination with the banjo and country music, nurtured by lessons from Detroit guitarist Robert Gillespie, provided the foundation for his later versatility. By age 17, he had relocated to Los Angeles, where he transitioned from session work to high-profile collaborations with artists ranging from k.d. lang to David Lee Roth.
His tenure with Marilyn Manson, which began in 1998, remains a defining chapter. Manson bestowed the stage name 'John 5' upon him, referencing both the Bible and his status as the band's fifth member. Despite the band’s creative success during the Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood eras, the relationship was fraught with tension. Lowery later revealed that he was dismissed from the group in 2004, a decision he contested at the time by using live performance recordings to disprove accusations of stage errors. The two have since reconciled.
Following his departure from Manson, Lowery found a long-term creative home with Rob Zombie, co-writing numerous albums and scoring films. His reputation for reliability and technical perfection eventually led him to Mötley Crüe in 2022. Between these massive projects, he has maintained a prolific solo career, releasing eleven instrumental albums that showcase his eclectic influences, from classic rock to technical shredding. His ability to balance the demands of industrial metal, country, and mainstream rock has solidified his status as one of the industry's most sought-after guitarists.
