In short: John Beaufort was a man of immense pedigree and tragic competence. A first cousin to Henry V and grandfather to Henry VII, his military blunders and perceived greed fueled a bitter rivalry with the House of York that would eventually reshape the English monarchy.

Born in 1404 as the illegitimate son of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford, John Beaufort ascended to high status despite his birth. He became the 3rd Earl of Somerset in 1418 after his elder brother died at the Siege of Rouen. However, his early career was defined by capture; in 1421, he was imprisoned for 17 years following the Battle of Baugé. He was only ransomed in 1438, emerging as a leading commander during the final stages of the Hundred Years' War.

Somerset's reputation suffered significantly during the 1440s. While he successfully led a squadron to prevent a French landing at Harfleur in 1440, his later leadership was marred by indecision. In 1443, he was appointed Lieutenant of Aquitaine and Captain-General of Guyenne. During this tenure, he was criticized for 'dithering' while the French seized key territories. His failure to secure Guyenne, contrasted with the successes of the Duke of York, created a deep political rift. The tension peaked when Somerset received a payment of £25,000 while York remained heavily in debt.

Somerset died in 1444, possibly by suicide, following a disastrous campaign where he blundered into a town with which England had signed a peace treaty. His death, alongside that of his uncle Cardinal Beaufort, signaled the end of Beaufort dominance. Yet, his legacy lived on through his only daughter, Lady Margaret Beaufort. She married Edmund Tudor, providing the lineage for Henry VII, the first Tudor king, effectively ensuring that while Somerset lost the war, his bloodline won the throne.
