The Vanishing Earl: How a High-Stakes Gambler Became Britain’s Most Infamous Missing Person
In short: Lord Lucan was a privileged aristocrat and professional gambler who lived in the fast lane of London society. In 1974, after a brutal murder in his family home, he vanished without a trace. His disappearance sparked decades of speculation, legal battles, and a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.
Richard John Bingham, the 7th Earl of Lucan, was born in 1934 into an aristocratic family with a history of military distinction. Educated at Eton and a former officer in the Coldstream Guards, he became a fixture of London’s exclusive Clermont Club. As a professional gambler, he was once ranked among the world’s top ten backgammon players, yet his lifestyle of racing power boats and driving Aston Martins far outstripped his actual earnings. By the early 1970s, his financial situation had become dire, exacerbated by mounting gambling debts and a bitter, failed custody battle for his three children following his separation from his wife, Veronica.
The turning point occurred on the night of 7 November 1974. Sandra Rivett, the family’s nanny, was murdered in the Lucan home at 46 Lower Belgrave Street. Veronica, who was also attacked, escaped to a nearby pub, the Plumbers Arms, where she identified her husband as the assailant. Lucan subsequently fled, making several phone calls and writing letters protesting his innocence before his car was found abandoned in Newhaven. He was never seen again. An inquest in 1975 officially named him as the killer, though he was not declared legally dead until 1999.
The case remains a subject of intense debate. Lucan’s financial desperation was extreme; estimates suggest he accrued debts of roughly £50,000 between September and October 1974 alone. While some friends described him as appearing calm in the days leading up to the murder, others reported that he had previously discussed killing his wife to escape bankruptcy. Whether he took his own life, fled abroad, or met another fate remains unknown. In 2016, a death certificate was finally issued, allowing his son George to inherit his titles, yet the truth behind the events of that night continues to elude investigators and the public alike.
