In short: John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, became the first known person of European descent to explore the region that became Yellowstone National Park. Beyond his geographical discoveries, he is immortalized for a harrowing, naked flight from Blackfeet warriors that remains a foundational myth of the American West.

Born around 1774 in Virginia, John Colter joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. His exceptional skills as a hunter and woodsman made him indispensable to the Corps of Discovery. After being honorably discharged in 1806, he immediately returned to the wilderness to trap beaver. By 1807, he was exploring the Yellowstone and Grand Teton regions, becoming the first white man to witness the geothermal wonders that skeptics later jokingly dubbed Colter's Hell.

Colter's reputation for survival was cemented in 1809 following a violent encounter with the Blackfeet near the Jefferson River. After his companion John Potts was killed, Colter was stripped naked and forced to run for his life. He managed to outrun his pursuers, kill one assailant with a broken spear, and hide in a beaver lodge before walking eleven days to safety. This event, known as Colter's Run, has been retold in numerous films and stories, shaping the enduring archetype of the reclusive, rugged mountain man.

Despite his fame, much of Colter's life remains shrouded in mystery. Historians debate the accuracy of the 1814 map produced by William Clark, which incorporated Colter's reports but contained significant geographical errors. Furthermore, while the discovery of the 'Colter Stone' in Idaho in the 1930s suggests he crossed the Teton Range in 1808, the artifact has never been fully authenticated. Colter retired to a farm in Missouri around 1810 and died shortly thereafter, leaving behind no personal writings to confirm or contest the legends that grew around his name.
