From childhood poverty to the frontlines of cryptocurrency litigation and Senate races
In short: John Deaton’s journey began in a Michigan enclave marked by violence and food stamps. After surviving testicular cancer and serving in the Marine Corps, the attorney transitioned from mesothelioma litigation to becoming a pivotal figure in the legal battles surrounding digital assets and the XRP token.
Born in Highland Park, Michigan, around 1966 or 1967, Deaton was raised by a single mother in a household that relied on welfare and food stamps. After dropping out of high school, he eventually returned to finish his education, becoming the first in his family to graduate. In 1989, he completed a B.A., magna cum laude, at Eastern Michigan University, during which time he battled and recovered from testicular cancer. He subsequently obtained a J.D. via the New England School of Law in 1995.
Deaton's legal career is defined by two distinct chapters: specialized litigation and cryptocurrency regulation. Following seven years in the United States Marine Corps Judge Advocate Division, where he was medically retired in 2002, he established the Deaton Law Firm in 2006. He gained recognition for representing plaintiffs in asbestos and mesothelioma cases, including a 2018 ruling regarding household exposure to fibers. More recently, he has been a prominent voice in digital asset law, acting as amicus curiae counsel for over 75,000 XRP holders in a case where a judge ruled in July 2023 that XRP did not satisfy the requirements of an investment contract.
In the political arena, Deaton has emerged as a Republican candidate in Massachusetts. He ran as an anti-Trump centrist in the 2024 Senate election, losing to Elizabeth Warren with 40.1 percent of the vote. He has since sought the Republican nomination again for the 2026 election, challenging incumbent Ed Markey. His platform includes support for abortion rights and same-sex marriage, while advocating for a diverse energy mix of solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power, while opposing net-zero emissions targets by 2050 due to potential job losses.
