From Australian cattle herder to Scottish television mainstay
In short: Before becoming a familiar face in British drama, John Michie spent a year working as a jackaroo on a cargo ship. His journey from the plains of Australia to the heights of West End theatre and long-running television roles is a testament to a remarkably diverse career.
Born in Burma on 25 October 1956, John Michie's early life was shaped by international movement. While his family was based in Kenya, he attended Windlesham House School and later Glenalmond College from age twelve. Seeking adventure at nineteen, he travelled to Australia via cargo ship, herding cattle as a jackaroo for one year prior to his return to Scotland to discover his vocation.
His acting career began on the stage, with his first professional role appearing in 1980 in Nairobi at the Donovan Maule Theatre. He quickly transitioned to the West End, appearing in productions such as Jean Anouilh's 'Number One' at the Queen's Theatre in 1984 and Noël Coward's 'Easy Virtue' at the Garrick Theatre between 1988 and 1989. He has since become a staple of both stage and screen, known for his versatility across genres.
Michie is perhaps most recognized for his television work, including his long-running role as DI Robbie Ross in the detective drama 'Taggart' starting in 1998. He has also appeared in 'Coronation Street' as Karl Munro from 2011 to 2013, and has held regular roles in medical dramas like 'Holby City' and 'Casualty'. Beyond acting, he has lent his voice to documentaries and has explored historical subjects through his own presenting work.
His personal life has also been marked by significant public interest, including a complex legal case involving the death of his daughter, Louella Fletcher-Michie, at the Bestival music festival in 2017. While a manslaughter conviction for her friend was eventually quashed by the Court of Appeal, the incident remains a poignant chapter in his life history.
