How Jonquel Jones became the first WNBA player to claim three major individual honors
In short: Born in the Bahamas and standing at 6'6", Jonquel Jones has redefined versatility in professional basketball. Beyond her dominance in the WNBA, she has navigated a complex international career, becoming a naturalized citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina and competing across leagues in South Korea, China, Russia, Turkey, and beyond.
Jonquel Orthea Jones, born in 1994, began her journey in the Bahamas before moving to Maryland at age 14. Her professional ascent began when she was drafted sixth overall in the 2016 WNBA draft. Initially a backup center for the Connecticut Sun, she experienced a breakout 2017 season, setting a single-season rebounding record with 403 boards and earning the WNBA Most Improved Player Award. Her trajectory continued to climb as she adapted to various roles, including winning the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year award in 2018.
The pinnacle of her individual success arrived in 2021, when she was named the WNBA MVP. This achievement made her the first player in league history to win the MVP, Sixth Woman of the Year, and Most Improved Player awards. Her 2021 season was marked by career-high averages of 19.4 points and 11.2 rebounds, leading the Sun to the league's best record. Her impact extends beyond the WNBA; she represented Bosnia and Herzegovina internationally, setting an all-time record for rebounds in a single EuroBasket game with 24 in 2021.
Jones has also demonstrated remarkable adaptability in her club career. After playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia, she departed following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, eventually joining the Turkish team Çukurova Basketbol. Since moving to the New York Liberty in 2023, she has continued to collect accolades, including MVP honors at the 2023 Commissioner's Cup and the 2024 WNBA Finals MVP award. Her career remains a testament to both physical dominance and the ability to thrive in shifting global basketball landscapes.
