From high school teacher to WNBA head coach: the rise of Jose Fernandez
In short: Before leading the Dallas Wings in the WNBA, Jose Fernandez built a coaching career through the ranks of Florida's high schools and collegiate programs. His journey from a student assistant at Miami-Dade to a championship-contending head coach is a masterclass in steady professional ascent.
Jose Luis Fernandez, born on November 18, 1971, began his coaching journey while pursuing an associate degree at Miami-Dade CC Kendall. In 1991, his role as a student assistant coach for the men's basketball squad involved tasks from court-side instruction to managing recruiting mail. After earning his bachelor's degree in physical education from Florida International University in 1994, Fernandez balanced his early professional coaching with teaching physical education at several Miami high schools, including Coral Reef Senior, Southwest Senior, and Hialeah Middle School.
His tactical development accelerated through strategic partnerships and diverse roles. After a stint as an assistant at Sunset High School, he joined Cesar Odio at Barry University as a top assistant from 1994 to 1996, helping the Buccaneers achieve consecutive winning seasons and a 34–21 record. This period was transformative for the program, which had previously produced only two winning seasons in its first decade. Fernandez then pivoted to girls' basketball in 1996, securing his first head coaching role at Miami's Lourdes Academy.
At Lourdes, Fernandez demonstrated significant leadership, leading the Bobcats to an 83–16 record and a state Class 5A championship runner-up finish in 1998. He also expanded his influence by founding the Miami Suns AAU program. After a second stint at Barry University from 1999 to 2000, where he helped secure the program's second-best record of 22–8, Fernandez transitioned into a long-term tenure with the South Florida Bulls women's team from 2000 to 2025. This long-term commitment eventually culminated in his appointment as the head coach of the Dallas Wings on October 27, 2025.
