From Yale law clerk to the center of a Senate election challenge
In short: Before he was a firebrand senator, Josh Hawley was a highly decorated student and Supreme Court clerk. His journey from writing local newspaper columns in Missouri to leading the first GOP objection to the 2020 election results reveals the evolution of a modern political heavyweight.
Josh Hawley’s political identity is rooted in a long-standing conservative tradition. While attending Rockhurst High School, he began writing columns for The Lexington News, addressing topics ranging from affirmative action to the militia movements following the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. His academic credentials are equally notable: he was the valedictorian of his high school class, graduated with highest honors from Stanford University in 2002, and earned his law degree from Yale in 2006.
His legal career provided the foundation for his political rise. After clerking for Judge Michael W. McConnell and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Hawley worked in private practice and for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. In the latter role, he helped draft legal briefs for the landmark Hobby Lobby case, which allowed closely held corporations to opt out of certain contraceptive mandates on religious grounds.
Hawley entered the national spotlight as Missouri Attorney General in 201<0xC2>7, launching investigations into opioid manufacturers and the state's governor. In 2018, he defeated incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill with 51.4 percent of the vote. Since entering the Senate in 2019, he has become a prominent figure in the Trump-aligned wing of the Republican Party, notably being the first GOP senator to announce an objection to the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Today, Hawley continues to focus on populist themes, often targeting large technology companies as modern 'robber barons.' His political trajectory—from a law professor at the University of Missouri to a reelected senator in 2024—reflects a career defined by high-stakes legal battles and a direct challenge to established political and corporate orders.
