From Carol City to the Billboard charts: the rapid rise of rapper JT
In short: Jatavia Shakara Johnson, known as JT, transformed a viral SoundCloud diss track into a multifaceted solo career. After navigating a challenging childhood and federal incarceration, the Miami native emerged as a defining voice in modern hip hop, balancing chart success with fashion ventures and a dedicated commitment to LGBTQ advocacy.
Born in 1992 in Miami, Florida, Jatavia Shakara Johnson grew up in Carol City and Liberty City. Her early life was marked by instability; she moved in with her father at age five after her mother, who struggled with addiction, was incarcerated. Despite these hardships, Johnson fostered a creative spirit, forming a rap group called The Protegees with her 18 siblings. Her path to stardom began in middle school when she befriended Caresha Brownlee. In 2017, the pair formed the duo City Girls, gaining immediate attention with their viral debut track, 'Fuck Dat Nigga'.
The duo's momentum was temporarily halted in 2018 when Johnson was sentenced to two years in federal prison for aggravated identity theft related to fraudulent credit card charges. She surrendered to authorities in June 2018, serving time at FCI Tallahassee before being transferred to an Atlanta halfway house in October 2019. She was released from federal custody in March 2020. During this period, the City Girls continued to build their profile, notably through an uncredited feature on Drake's 2018 hit 'In My Feelings', which propelled them into mainstream recognition.
Johnson officially launched her solo career in 2023, releasing her debut solo single 'No Bars' that July. Her artistic evolution continued with the 2024 release of her debut solo mixtape, City Cinderella. Her single 'Okay', released in April 2024, became a significant milestone, marking her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo act. Beyond music, Johnson has expanded her influence by launching the lifestyle brand thegirljtworld in 2023 and maintaining an active role as a supporter of the LGBTQ community. Her journey reflects a persistent drive to redefine her narrative, moving from the constraints of her past to the forefront of the contemporary rap industry.
