A Hollywood icon whose career spanned eight decades and a mysterious billionaire marriage
In short: Terry Moore began as a child star in the 1940s and evolved into a Golden Age fixture. Beyond her Academy Award-nominated performances and prolific filmography, she became a tabloid sensation for claiming a secret 1949 marriage to Howard Hughes, a saga that involved international waters and complex legal battles.
Born Helen Luella Koford in 1929, Moore entered the film industry as a child performer, securing an uncredited role in the 1944 classic Gaslight. She adopted the name Terry Moore after starring in the 1948 film The Return of October. Her breakthrough arrived with the 1949 RKO production Mighty Joe Young, followed by an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the 1952 film Come Back, Little Sheba. Throughout the 1950s, she became a staple at 20th Century-Fox, appearing in hits like Beneath the 12-Mile Reef and Peyton Place.
Moore's personal life often eclipsed her professional achievements, particularly her assertion that she wed Howard Hughes aboard a ship in 1949. While this union was never legally recognized, Moore maintained that the marriage remained intact until Hughes's death. She justified her subsequent marriages during that period by citing a powerful desire to have children, famously remarking that she was unconcerned about the potential for bigamy. This claim sparked significant legal friction, as Texas courts ultimately rejected her status as Hughes's widow.
The legal rejection stemmed from judicial estoppel; Moore had previously claimed in a 1959 divorce settlement that she was married to Stuart Cramer, making her simultaneous claim of being married to Hughes inconsistent. Despite this, the Hughes estate reached a financial settlement with her. While Moore characterized the payout as reaching eight figures, other accounts suggest the sum was closer to $350,000. Moore remains one of the few performers from Hollywood's classic era still active today, having continued to work in film and television well into the 21st century.
