In short: In March 2020, singer Kanika Kapoor returned from London and attended multiple high-profile gatherings in Lucknow. Her subsequent COVID-19 diagnosis sparked a massive public controversy, forcing top Indian politicians and bureaucrats into self-isolation and triggering a domino effect that reached the President of India's official residence, Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Kanika Kapoor, born in 1978 in Lucknow, rose to fame in 2012 with the commercial success of her music video Jugni Ji. She transitioned into Bollywood playback singing in 2014 with the hit Baby Doll from the film Ragini MMS 2, which earned her significant critical acclaim, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Throughout the mid-2010s, she became a fixture in Hindi cinema, lending her voice to chart-topping tracks like Lovely and Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan.

The controversy began on 20 March 2020, when Kapoor tested positive for COVID-19. Despite government advisories regarding international travel, she had attended several parties in Lucknow featuring prominent figures, including former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh. Because these politicians had interacted with others, including Member of Parliament Dushyant Singh, a widespread quarantine effort was initiated. Dushyant Singh's subsequent meeting with the President of India led to the indefinite cancellation of all engagements at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The situation was marked by conflicting reports and public outcry. While initial complaints alleged she ignored screening protocols at Lucknow airport, the Chief Medical Officer later clarified that she had been advised to self-isolate upon landing in Mumbai. Kapoor consistently denied attending large social gatherings, though viral photos and videos contradicted her statements. She underwent six tests between 20 March and 4 April 2020, testing positive five consecutive times before receiving a negative result and being discharged from the hospital on 6 April 2020.

Despite the intense scrutiny surrounding the 2020 incident, Kapoor has continued her career, including serving as a judge on The Voice in 2019 and contributing to the 2025 album Sounds of Kumbha, which received a nomination for Best Global Music Album at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Her work also extends to philanthropy and heritage, notably through her fashion brand, House of Chikankari, which supports female artisans in Lucknow.
