How a Physics Graduate Revolutionized Indian Cinema Through Experimental Storytelling and Genre-Bending Films
In short: Singeetham Srinivasa Rao was a master of versatility who directed roughly 60 films across multiple languages. From India's first dialogue-less feature to landmark science fiction and fantasy epics, his experimental approach reshaped South Indian cinema. His career spanned over seven decades, leaving an indelible mark on both audiences and future filmmakers.
Born in 1931, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao initially pursued a degree in physics before turning his attention to the arts. His cinematic journey began as an apprentice to director K. V. Reddy in 1954, where he honed his craft for over a decade. After his directorial debut in 1972, he quickly gained a reputation for refusing to be boxed into a single genre. His filmography is a testament to this, encompassing everything from social dramas to complex musical fantasies.
Rao is perhaps best known for his daring experiments, such as the 1987 film Pushpaka Vimana, a critically acclaimed feature that contained no dialogue. He also pushed the boundaries of Telugu cinema with genre-defining works like the science fiction film Aditya 369 and the folklore-inspired Bhairava Dweepam. His ability to navigate diverse storytelling styles—including animation and comedy—earned him numerous accolades, including the Film Federation of India's Life Achievement Award in 2011.
Beyond his own directorial work, Rao was a vital mentor to the next generation of Indian directors. He provided guidance on the script and production of the 2024 film Kalki 2898 AD, a high-budget science fiction project. His influence remains profound; younger filmmakers like Prasanth Varma cite him as a primary inspiration, specifically admiring his unique ability to build a vast, diverse body of work without ever repeating himself. Rao continued to create until his final years, releasing his last film, Sing Geetham, in 2026.
His collaborations were equally legendary, particularly with actors Kamal Haasan and Rajkumar. He was the only director to work with Rajkumar and all three of his sons, and he directed Kamal Haasan in several of his most iconic roles. By blending technical precision with creative risk-taking, Rao transformed the landscape of Indian cinema, proving that innovation and commercial success could coexist seamlessly.
