The rising star who secured the first UFC main event win for the 2000s generation
In short: Tatsuro Taira is rewriting the record books in the UFC flyweight division. From his amateur Shooto roots to headlining major events, this Japanese specialist has become a dominant force, combining high-level grappling with a relentless pace that has earned him multiple post-fight bonuses.
Born on January 27, 2000, Tatsuro Taira transitioned from a brief interest in baseball to professional mixed martial arts after being influenced by his brother's kickboxing training in Okinawa. After a dominant amateur career in Shooto, where he secured two championships in 2017, Taira entered the professional ranks with a perfect ten-fight winning streak.
Taira's ascent in the UFC has been marked by significant milestones and technical dominance. In June 2024, he defeated Alex Perez, becoming the inaugural 2000s-born athlete to secure a UFC main event victory. His grappling prowess is reflected in his statistics, where he holds the second-highest control time percentage in the division at 52.1%, and the second-highest top-position percentage at 45.7%.
His career has been characterized by high-stakes encounters and resilience. Despite facing setbacks, such as the cancellation of a scheduled bout against Joshua Van due to injury, Taira has remained a top contender. As of July 11, 2026, he is ranked #4 in the Meta UFC flyweight rankings. His ability to finish fights has seen him tie for fourth in most finishes in the division's history with six victories.
Beyond his technical skill, Taira has become a frequent recipient of performance accolades. He has earned three Performance of the Night bonuses and two Fight of the Night awards, including a $100,000 bonus for his 2026 clash with Joshua Van. This combination of grappling control and finishing ability has solidified his position as a premier athlete in the flyweight division.
