The tragic hero born with divine armor and a heavy secret
In short: He was abandoned in a basket on the Ganges, a child of a solar deity and a princess. Known for his unmatched generosity and martial skill, Karna remains one of the most complex figures in the Mahabharata—a man caught between his divine lineage and his chosen loyalties.
Karna’s life is defined by a profound tension between his extraordinary origins and his social rejection. Born to the princess Kunti and the sun god Surya, he entered the world with a divine breastplate and golden earrings. However, fearing the stigma of premarital motherhood, Kunti set the infant adrift in the Ashvanadi river. He was eventually discovered and raised by a charioteer, Adhiratha Nandana, and his wife Radha, growing up as a 'Sutaputra'—a son of a low caste.
This social displacement shaped his character into that of a 'flawed good man.' While he was a gifted speaker and a warrior of immense ability, he was frequently bullied and ridiculed for his perceived low birth. This vulnerability made him susceptible to the influence of Duryodhana, the prince who offered him the kingdom of Anga to secure his lifelong friendship. While Karna was intensely loyal to the Kauravas, he also acted as a hawkish advisor, often pushing for direct, violent confrontation against the Pandavas.
His tragedy is compounded by a series of broken connections and curses. He discovered late in the epic that his enemies, the Pandavas, were actually his half-brothers. Furthermore, after disguising himself as a Brahmin to study under the sage Parashurama, he was cursed to forget the secret of the powerful Brahmastra weapon at the most critical moment of battle. Ultimately, after giving away his divine armor in an act of legendary charity, Karna fell in battle against his peer, Arjuna, during the Kurukshetra War.
