Ancient dynasties and forest deities collide in a pre-colonial epic
In short: Before the modern legends of coastal Karnataka were written, a ruthless kingdom sought to conquer the sacred. Explore the mythical origins of the Daivas—divine guardians who maintain the balance between mankind and the wild—in a sprawling prequel that blends regional folklore with ancestral conflict.
Kantara: Chapter 1 examines how the area's religious heritage first developed, occurring throughout the Kadamba dynasty's rule in old coastal Karnataka. The narrative centers on the mysterious forests of Kantara, a protected spiritual realm guarded by powerful Daivas, specifically Panjurli and Guliga. These entities are depicted as maintaining the delicate equilibrium between human civilization and the natural world. The conflict is ignited by the kingdom of Bangra, led by the tyrannical King Vijayendra. Driven by a desire for expansion, Vijayendra seeks to exploit the forest's sacred spice lands, leading to the enslavement of local villagers. This exploitation triggers a supernatural backlash: Vijayendra is trapped within the forbidden forest and destroyed by the Daivas. His son, Rajashekhara, inherits the throne under a solemn vow never to disturb the sacred land again, setting the stage for a generational struggle over resources and faith. The story follows Berme, a warrior raised by a tribal girl connected to the forest's mystical powers. As Berme and his group navigate the tension between the kingdom's trade ambitions and the forest's sanctity, the film reveals a deeper betrayal. It is eventually uncovered that the kingdom had conspired with the Kadapa tribe—skilled in black magic—to install Daiva idols in a temple to feast on their powers. The film concludes with a mystical sealing and a final battle where Berme, possessed by the spirits, cements his place in the eternal legend of the forest.
