From Capitol Hill to the anchor desk: the career of journalist Kasie Hunt
In short: Kasie Hunt has spent over a decade navigating the high-stakes world of American political journalism. From reporting on the Affordable Care Act to anchoring major network programs, her career reflects the shifting landscape of broadcast news, marked by high-profile interviews, public corrections, and a personal journey through significant health challenges.
Born in 1985 in Dearborn, Michigan, Kasie Hunt built a career defined by rapid movement through the ranks of political media. After graduating from George Washington University in 2006 and earning a master's degree from St John's College, Cambridge, she began her professional path as an intern at NBC News. Her early reporting included covering health policy and the 2010 midterm elections for Politico, followed by a stint at the Associated Press where she tracked Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign.
Hunt's tenure at NBC News and MSNBC saw her transition from an off-air producer to a prominent on-air personality, hosting shows like Way Too Early and Kasie DC. Her career has not been without controversy; she faced criticism for comments regarding an attack on Senator Rand Paul in 2017 and for misidentifying a child victim in a 2024 segment regarding Gaza protests. In 2021, she moved to CNN, where she has anchored various programs, including her current show, The Arena with Kasie Hunt, which launched in March 2025.
Beyond the studio, Hunt's life has been punctuated by both personal milestones and medical hurdles. She married producer Matt Rivera in 2017 and has two children. In October 2021, she underwent a four-hour surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. These experiences, alongside her public-facing role, highlight the intense pressures inherent in modern political broadcasting, where journalists are expected to maintain composure during volatile interviews, such as her 2024 exchange with Karoline Leavitt, while managing the scrutiny of a global audience.
