How a 19th-century outlaw became the face of a modern cinematic revolution in Kerala
In short: Kayamkulam Kochunni, a legendary thief who robbed from the rich to aid the poor, was reimagined in a 2018 epic. The film, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam release of its year, explores the social structures and caste-based cruelty of 1850s Travancore through the lens of a socialist folk hero.
The 2018 film Kayamkulam Kochunni, directed by Rosshan Andrrews, breathes new life into the story of a real-life outlaw who lived in the Central Travancore region during the 19th century. While the character is often compared to Robin Hood for his redistribution of wealth, the screenplay—developed over two-and-a-half years by writers Bobby and Sanjay—aims to move beyond simple folklore. By consulting Kottarathil Sankunni's Aithihyamala alongside oral histories, the production team sought to depict the protagonist not just as a thief, but as a figure fighting against the rigid, often cruel, caste hierarchies of the era.
The production was a massive undertaking, spanning 161 days of filming across locations including Udupi, Goa, and Sri Lanka. To capture the period's intensity, lead actor Nivin Pauly underwent rigorous training in Kalaripayattu, a traditional martial art, and horse riding. The film also features an extended cameo by Mohanlal as Ithikkara Pakki, a legendary thief and mentor who serves as a catalyst for Kochunni’s transformation. With a budget of approximately ₹30 crore, the film utilized detailed sets and the expertise of three different cinematographers to achieve its visual scale.
Upon its release on 11 October 2018, the film achieved significant commercial success, grossing an estimated ₹67–70 crore globally. It set records at the Kerala box office, including the highest opening-day collection in the state. Critical reception was largely positive, with reviewers praising its cinematography and political subtext, though some critics felt the narrative could have been grittier. Ultimately, the film serves as both a spectacle and a reflection on social justice, using the life of a historical outcast to challenge the mindsets of modern audiences.
