How a struggling journalist turned a £200 car repair bill into a literary empire
In short: Ken Follett began his writing career as a side hustle to cover a modest car repair bill. Today, he is a global publishing phenomenon with nearly 200 million books sold. From spy thrillers to sweeping historical epics, Follett has mastered the art of turning complex research into addictive, best-selling narratives.
Born in Cardiff in 1949 to a pious Plymouth Brethren family, Follett was raised without the influence of film or television, a restriction that fueled his early devotion to reading. After studying philosophy at University College London and working as a reporter, he found journalism unchallenging. He transitioned to publishing, eventually writing fiction in his spare time. His breakthrough arrived in 1978 with the spy thriller Eye of the Needle, which sold over 10 million copies and established his international reputation.
Follett is perhaps best known for his Kingsbridge series, which chronicles the development of a fictional English town across centuries. The series began with The Pillars of the Earth (1989), a massive success that spent eighteen weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and has sold 26 million copies. The series is lauded for its comprehensive depiction of medieval civilization, covering everything from architectural feats to the social impact of the Black Death and the Industrial Revolution.
Beyond his fiction, Follett is deeply involved in literacy advocacy and political life. He has chaired national reading initiatives and served as a school governor, while also engaging in public debate, such as his 2010 opposition to a papal visit. His commitment to historical preservation is equally tangible; in 2021, he donated over £127,000 in book proceeds to restore a French cathedral. His archives, including original manuscripts and early drafts, are now preserved at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan.
His work has transcended the page, inspiring television mini-series, video games, and even Danish-language musicals. Despite his immense commercial success, Follett remains a prolific writer, having published 44 books by 2018. Whether exploring the Cold War in his Century Trilogy or the societal upheaval of the 18th century, Follett’s career demonstrates a unique ability to blend meticulous historical detail with the pacing of a modern thriller.
